Mewes, Larson Overpower Pins, Opponents to Earn Hobart Titles
Merrillville Standout Larson earns second title in as many events
Carly Larson continued her winning ways,this time defeating Hebron's Emily O'leary and Griffith's Elizabeth Kras in the
stepladder matches to capture the title in the NWIJTPA Right Angle Pro Shop Sport Shot Challenge at Hobart Lanes.
The Merrillville lefty qualified second with a 1,002 6-game total on the difficult Indiana Masters pattern. She then
defeated the third seeded O'leary 172-158, then top seeded Kras 162-131. Kras led qualifying with a fine 1,082.
Larson collected $100 in scholarship earnings while Kras earned $60 and the only girls junior gold spot for the event.
Purdue's Randy Mewes led qualifying with a 1,153 on the strength of the event's high game, an impressive 279. Ge
then took out #5 seeded Jake McCoy 171-134 and #3 seed, Lake Central product Colin Young, 209 - 166 to earn his first
title. McCoy advanced to the semi's with a 187-140 victory over #4 seed Brad Fisher. Young advanced to the finals on
the strength of a 192, good enough to dispose of #2 seed Ryan McCoy in the semi's and a 203-174 dismantling of #6
seed Tyler McKinney.
Mewes earned $125 for his first place finish while Young banked $75. The McCoy brothers each collected $50. Both
Mewes and Ryan McCoy earned Junior Gold spots.
This month's event introduced "Brackets" to the format. In all $120 was awarded in scholarship earnings through the
bracket competition. Mewes collected $50, Andy Schmied $15, Brad Fisher $15, Carly Larson $10, Jake McCoy $15, and
Tyler McKinney $15.
The next event is January 15, 2012 at Westchester Lanes in Chesterton with a 10:00 am start-time. The pattern will be
one of Kegel's sport compliant patterns (to be posted once determined). This event is also a DOUBLE POINTS event.
